◾ Aim: A model space is a subspace of the Hardy space of the unit disk which is backward shift invariant. Thus, it is described by an inner function by the Beurling invariant subspace theorem. These model spaces are important in Sz. Nagy-Foias operator model theory. The truncated Toeplitz operators (TTO) on model spaces associated with inner functions were formally introduced by Sarason in 2007, but special cases have existed long ago. In particular, Toeplitz matrices are TTO and they have wide applications in engineering and computational sciences. The purpose of these lectures is to give a basic introduction to this field of research, which has grown tremendously since 2007. In particular, there are many excellent results on this topic in connection with complex symmetric operators, function theory on the Hardy space, and spectral theory of relevant operators. However, the research on the matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz and Hankel operators is just beginning and there many open questions.
